How to Become Motivated to Workout

Tip #1 – Find a workout style that you actually enjoy

Not everyone likes to run (I’ll raise my hand to that), or lift heavy weights, or even dance around. When stating your fitness journey it is important to experiment with lots of different styes of workouts ignorer to find the ones that work for you. Maybe a mix of HIIT and yoga is your style. Or you never even thought boxing would ignite your passion. Whatever you’re calling is, find it and let those feelings guide you.

Tip #2 – Create a playlist that makes you feel strong

We all have those go-to songs that make us feel like we could run a marathon, or dance all night long, and these feelings are important during a workout. Try to get pumped up before a workout by listening to some of the songs and you’ll actually become more inspired to workout. Having a mini dance party in your room or jamming out in your car on the way to the gym is a fantastic way to set a positive tone for your workout.

Tip #3 – Invest in outfits that make you feel confident

Let’s face it, if you’re going to be a sweaty mess, you may as well look good doing it. By dressing in clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident, you are more like to go harder and put more effort into your workout. Whether it be wearing a tight pair of shorts to show off the legs, or a loose shirt that allows for a better range of motion, the more comfortable you are, the more likely that confidence will transfer into your workout.

Tip #4 – STRETCH

When beginning ay new activity, your muscles will be #shook at the effort you’re putting in. This often leads to muscle pain or soreness the next day that can make you feel like giving up. DON’T! This pain is temporary. Its important to warm-up and cool down after a workout by doing dynamics stretches to release and muscle tension. But, if you’re too sore to workout the next day, try going for a walk or doing a light yoga routine to stretch out the muscles and recover faster.

Tip #5 – Find a #FitSquad

While you don’t have to call it a #FitSquad (but I enjoy the name), find a group of people that will hold you accountable to your plan. By telling others that you’re on a fitness journey, you’ll be more likely to follow through on your workouts. You can also try including them in group workouts or by creating a workout routine that everyone has to follow. By including others in your journey, you’ll have others to rely on when you start to feel unmotivated or uninspired.

Travel Diaries: Mexico 2017

Day 2: Short and Sweet

I awoke on my first full day in Mexico feeling invigorated and ready to start my adventure. I’m greeted in the kitchen with bold Mexican coffee curtsey of my father, and am instantly sent of a caffeine kick that will last a few hours. The weather was perfect and I was ready to start exploring.

We start by planning our day which starts with visiting the vendors near Centro in Puerto Vallarta. I learn that these people come from all over Mexico to sell their handmade products and goods in makeshift markets they set up. We arrived just in time, as they would be leaving for their next destination the following day.

Unfortunately, I did not take many photos this day as I was mostly concerned with getting cool souvenirs for my friends back in Canada.

However, I did have a photo taken of me eating a delicious pastry filled with Nutella. The running theme of this trip seemed to be “Foreigner Eats North American Foods While in Mexico”, but I don’t mind because it was amazingly life-changing.

Later that day my father had to attend a funeral, so naturally I took a nap then FaceTimed my boyfriend. The funeral lasted longer than expected so I spent the remainder of my time watching the Korean Drama “Boys Over Flowers”, and eating jaka (jackfruit).

When he returned, we decided to make Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus water). It is my favourite drink as it is tart and sweet at the same time, and of course it’s pink so what’s not to love?

Despite it being a relatively uneventful day, I still enjoyed the sounds of rain against the palm trees that night.

Travel Diaries: Mexico 2017

Let me begin by saying that I love vacations. Whether it is an unofficial day off from school or a national holiday, any excuse to kick my feet up and relax is good for me. When it comes to international vacations it is a bit different, as I struggle with finding the right way to manage my time between exploring the city, and laying by the ocean. Join me as I take you through my most recent week long adventure in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

 Day 1: Arrival

My day started with a 3 am wake up call to begin my journey to the airport. Fast forward to 2 pm and I have finally arrived in Mexico 2 plane rides later. I’m greeted with a free margarita which I gladly accept to combat the humid airport, and I make my way to find my dad and begin the fun.

We stop at a small café to eat, as I slept through both plane rides and was ravenous. Despite being in leggings and a long sleeve shirt, I manage not to pass out from heat exhaustion. A car ride later and we arrive at his house where I quickly don my romper so we can start our next adventure. We drive 20 minutes to Nuevo Vallarta and walk along the beach. The salty air feels good after being trapped in a cold winter wasteland for 3 months back home. We make it to a pier where we can sit and look out at the water, or rather I take selfies and my dad admires the view.

We then walk through the resorts and find a shopping centre, but most importantly: a Starbucks. I grab a coffee Frappuccino and we sit down, to catch up and use the free Wi-Fi. We also saw two tigers being held in small cement cages at the resort, for no apparent reason other than for tourists to gawk at as they walk by. Strike One, Mexico.

We then make our way back to the car and we journey to a small local restaurant that serves the best salsa that I have ever had. I take more photos, and we walk around to help dinner digest.

We then head back home to rest and prepare our plans for the next day. Overall, it was an amazing first day.

Product Review: LUSH Kinky Hot Oil Treatment

I boiled my kettle and added in hot water according to the package instructions. It was very straightforward as you just keep adding hot water until the product melts.

PRO TIP: place the treatment in a microwave safe cup with water and heat it for 30 seconds. It works way faster this way.

I applied it to my hair from root-to-tip, scooping the product with my hands, and finger-combing it through my curls. I found this to be the easiest method of application. It smells amazing and didn’t make a mess when applying, as it absorbed quickly into my hair.

I then placed my hair in a top knot and watched tv until 20 minutes had gone by.
by this time my hair was somewhat hard with the product, but quickly melted in the shower. I only washed the roots of my hair in order to keep the product benefits at a maximum. I then applied a small dollop of conditioner to lock in the product, and that was it.

It was so fun to apply and the end result was amazing. Days later my hair was still super soft, and frizz-free. I love how it defined my curls without weighing them down.
An added benefit is that after using it, it takes way less product to style my hair!

Overall, this is now a staple in my hair-care regime.

5 Midterm Survival Tips

If you’re anything life me, exams can be one of the most stressful times of the school year. I somehow always leave studying to the last minute and then scramble to get my life in order. SO here I am to share my 5 tried-and-true tips on how to survive exam season.

Tip # 1 – Find your perfect study space

Whether you need the complete silence of a library or the bustle of a coffee shop, finding the right study space is key to acing your exams. If you are too comfortable then you’re likely to fall asleep (guilty) and if it’s too busy then you can’t focus (also guilty). For me, I prefer a coffee shop in the early afternoon when it’s not too busy and not dead silent either. So find your perfect space and get learning!

Tip # 2 – Love your supplies

I’m a sucker for all things cute and bright, so it’s no surprise that I have brightly coloured pens and a cat pencil case! Having the correct supplies for what your studying will keep you on track and looking forward to using them. Whether you enjoy sparkles, space, or animals there is definitely stationary out there for you to love.

Tip # 3 – Be comfortable

During exam season there is no need to get dressed up to study. But if that’s your thing, then go for it! People will understand as soon as you open your books that you mean business and have no time for their judgement. I recommend sweatpants or leggings as they allow to adjust your position with cutting off your circulation. Also dress in layers as sitting in one position without moving can make you a bit cold (hello sweater weather!).

Tip # 4 – Stay hydrated

Nothing’s worse than getting settled in for a long day of studying and then realizing you forgot your beverage. Drinking water is super important as it provides the energy for all brain functions, especially memory. You can even add frozen fruit for a fun twist and make drinking it more enjoyable. So want to pass your exams? Drink some water! And if you use a super cute tumbler or water bottle then it’s a bonus.

Tip # 5 – Find your playlist

For me, I need something playing in the background while I study. My tastes range from instrumental piano to hard-core punk anthems, so I don’t have a concrete playlist. But finding the right music to help you concentrate without relying on caffeine pick-me-ups throughout the night. Apps like Spotify and 8tracks are always promising for finding the right tunes for your study sesh.

Hopefully you’ll find at least one of these tips helpful or you can comment your own to help someone out. If any of these worked for you, please let me know as I’d love to hear your comments. And remember, you are worth more than a percentage.

Curly Hair Product Favourites

I love reading through posts about curly hair because I feel inspired to love and nourish my curls, not mention laughing at the popular “curly hair problems” memes people create. There is something so exciting about discovering new products or ways to style hair, which lead me to conclude that I should share my must have hair products.

Category: Leave in Conditioner

Product: Garnier Whole Blends Smoothing Hair Care with Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter Extracts

Review: I’ve been using this product for a few months and can honestly say it is AMAZING! This cream has a subtle tropical scent (think coconuts and suntan lotion) which I absolutely love. It absorbs into the hair well making curls soft to the touch but does not weigh them down. Overall, this product is great for adding moisture and taming frizzy fly-aways.

Category: Frizz Taming

Product: John Frieda Unwind Curls Calming Crème

Review: This product has changed my life forever. Literally I cannot express how wonderful my hair has been since this product has come into my life. Firstly, it fights shrinkage which all my curly girls can empathize with. It is a white liquid crème that when finger combed through the hair, softens, tames frizz, and loosens the curls to add length. I would recommend this product to anyone who suffers from shrinkage or wants to add extra moisture and/or definition.

Category: Styling Spray

Product: John Frieda Dream Curls Daily Styling Spray

Review: I cannot live without this. I’ve been using this product since 2011 and I cannot imagine what my life was like without it. Spray it into towel dried hair and then let air dry (or diffuse), and et voilà your style is complete.

Category: Shampoo

Product: OGX Kukui Oil Shampoo

Review: I only started using this shampoo 2 month ago, but I have already noticed massive improvements in my hair. It leaves my hair feeling soft and super hydrated even before I condition which is a major plus. Normally, shampoos leave my hair feeling stripped and straw-like but this product is very hydrating and smells like a tropical vacation.

Category: Conditioner

Product:  Garnier Damage Eraser Conditioner

Review: This conditioner is amazing for hydration and repairing dry and brittle hair. One of my major problems is locking in moisture during the winter months especially, and this conditioner always saves me. In the shower, I evenly distribute this product throughout the lengths of my hair, then tie my hair in a bun, and rinse it out at the end.

Category: Hydrating Mask

Product: L’Oreal Paris Hair Total Repair 5 Masque

Review: This is perfect to use when your hair needs a little extra TLC. I use this as I would another conditioner but I leave it on for a longer period of time (aka an extra long shower). This gives quick hydration and tons of shine, leaving hair feeling soft and silky.
